Work Package 1

Current Practice, Future Needs and Gap analysis

This work package gathers key information for the project. It features four main tasks: Review current data collection practices; Review future data needs; Gap analysis; And review current and emerging technologies . This information will be used to populate the first iteration of the INFRACOMS Technology database.

After gathering the information on the potential technologies, we will map these technologies against the gaps identified. This will form the first step in creating the INFRACOMS Technology database 1.0, which will provide a comprehensive list of remote condition monitoring technologies mapped to the current and future needs.  The Database will feed into WP2 and WP3. This Database will be a repository of all information about the Technologies such as providers, data collected and installation process. This will become increasingly powerful throughout WP2 and WP3 as further information and evaluations are added.

On completion of this project, the Database will be available in an open accessible shared platform for National Road Authorities to reassess and reappraise technologies in the future.

Objectives

  • Identify current and future needs

  • Identify the challenges & constraints

  • Identify the gaps

  • Identify emerging technologies.

  • Create the INFRACOMS Technology database Version 1.0

Key Tasks

  • Review Current Practice

  • Review Future Needs

  • Compare current practice against the future needs

  • Undertake Gap Analysis

Deliverables

D1.1: Report on current practice, future needs and gap analysis

D1.2 : Technology database 1.0: Comprehensive list of remote condition monitoring technologies mapped against the current and future needs of asset management

Work Package 2

Appraisal of New Technologies

In this work package we will undertake a holistic assessment to assess technologies and the data they collect in terms of the value they provide and their potential for supporting the key imperatives of National Road Authorities.

This work package will provide one of key outcomes of INFRACOMS – a list of appraised Technologies and a Technology appraisal toolkit. The Technology appraisal toolkit will justify the Business case for implementation of a set of technologies.

The Toolkit will provide an end-to end process for Technology appraisal, taking information from National Road Authorities’ individual needs through to the justification of implementing new technologies in their Organisation via a Business Case analysis.

The Toolkit will be provided in a form that is easily accessible and understandable by end users and will come with a guidance document. We will work with the National Road Authorities throughout the development process to take account of their inputs when creating the methodology of the Toolkit and provide training to them through regional workshops once the Toolkit is approved by PEB.

Objectives

  • Create appraisal methodology

  • Develop a practical Appraisal Toolkit

  • Appraise new and emerging technologies

  • Produce a list of appraised Technologies for implementation

Key Tasks

  • Designing the technology appraisal toolkit

  • Appraisal toolkit development

  • Technology appraisal

Deliverables

D2.1: Appraisal methodology

D2.2 : Appraisal toolkit and user manual

D2.3 :Technology Database 4.0

Work Package 2: Appraisal Toolkit Outline

Work Package 3

Data Interpretation and Visualisation

This work package is similar to WP2 but with specific focus on assessment of the processes required for data interpretation and integration. It will look into how the data collected by technologies adds value in the decision-making process for different assets. It explores further into the challenges National Road Authorities might face in terms of ICT / data management / data standards challenges which need to be met to implement the technologies.

The ultimate aim of this work package is to provide a robust scoring system for the third tier appraisal process. This will allow different technologies to be appraised based on their added value in the decision-making process and its cost of integration into National Road Authorities workflows. WP3 will also provide the information to WP5 to create a practical technology roadmap.

Objectives

  • Identification of methodologies for interpretation and integration process

  • Identification of data architecture requirements

  • Development of a decision support layer based for the third tier appraisal toolkit in WP2

Key Tasks

  • Correlation between data from technologies and the physical asset

  • Identify visualisation (analysis and representation) tools for technologies

  • Data architecture update to accommodate new technologies

  • Benefit of the new technologies for Asset Management

Deliverables

D3.1: Report on state-of-the-art data assessment and visualisation methods

D3.2: Report on data architecture required for new and emerging technologies

Work Package 4

Technology Case Studies

This work package provides support to the technology appraisal process by gathering case study evidence of technologies. This provides evidence and understanding of the added value that could be gained from implementing particular new remote monitoring technologies.

This work package will support the WP1 core task of identifying technologies. The catalogue of case studies collected will feed into version 1.0 of the INFRACOMS technology database developed in WP1.

Objectives

  • Provide practical reasoning why these new technologies are worth implementing

  • Provide information on costs of implementing technologies from the case study to WP2 third tier appraisal

  • Provide case study reports for the most promising remote condition monitoring technologies

Key Tasks

  • Identify relevant cases

  • Build case studies and catalogue

  • Technology appraisal

Deliverables

D4.1 Catalogue of case studies and case study report

Work Package 5

Road Map and action plan

This Work Package will deliver the Roadmap detailed in Our Vision. Having identified and appraised new remote condition monitoring technologies in WP1-WP4, we will develop a Roadmap and action plan for National Road Authorities to guide them through integration of new technologies within their existing Asset Management processes, which will support improved decisions on planning, strategy and investment.

Objectives

  • Develop a roadmap for the Implementation of new technologies for NRAs

  • Develop a roadmap for the selected technologies at Tier 3 appraisal

  • Develop a method for NRAs to self-assess maturity in the future

  • Verify the roadmap against selected case studies of specific technologies

Key Tasks

  • Organisational Roadmap to adopt new technologies

  • Technological Roadmap to adopt new technologies

  • Maturity level assessment for Road Authorities

  • Verification and implementation of roadmap for selected case studies

Deliverables

D5.1 Self-assessment methodology

D5.2 Roadmap implementation report

D5.3 Roadmap to adopt remote monitoring technologies

Work Package 6

Dissemination and Implementation plan

This is the final work package within this project, it is dedicated to planning, organising and undertaking effective dissemination and implementation tasks throughout the Project.

Knowledge transfer has been built into the project throughout its timeline ensuring its value continues beyond the project’s close. This work package establishes a formalised and structured approach to stakeholder engagement, including the creation of a Stakeholder Group.

It will deliver a wide ranging programme of dissemination activities via both virtual and physical means, including face-to-face regional workshops in three different geographical regions in Europe for the purpose of providing training and guidance to National Road Authorities on the project outcomes.

As part of this work package we will Prepare The technical specifications and cost estimates for the two follow up demonstrator projects.
